A traditional dance is a dance which has been developed within a traditional community, rather than being created by a choreographer or teacher. Steps and pattern are passed on from one generation to generation to another, gradually undergoing change. many folk dance have their origins in ritual fertility, marriage, religious, or war and express the character of the community who dance them.
Description :
There are three dominant tribes in West Kalimantan : Malay, Dayak, Chinese. they have their own traditional dance.
Malay traditional dance usually display in important traditional events, such as : Circle of Life Ceremony, Religious Ceremony, Harvest Ceremony, that occur each year. Dayak traditional dance usually display in important traditional events, such as : Gawai Dayak, Begantan, etc. Chinese traditional dance usually display in important traditional events, such as : Weddings, Gong Xi-Fat Choi, Cap Go Meh,etc.
In Malay there are lots of meanings of their traditional dances, there are social dance in malay, dayaknese, chinese society, the media to say the happiness in the association (Zapin Malay), tell the royal stories, and stories about the religion of Islam (Jepin Lembut). In Dayak also have meanings there are : dance that describes the movement of people planting rice ( Gantar dance), tells a hero from Dayak Kenyah to fight enemies (Kancet Pepatai Dance/Dance War). In Chinese also have meanings there are: use he dance as entertaiment for the king (North Barong sai), a ceremony to remove the evil spirit and dedicated as a ritual to invite good luck (South Barong Sai).
Dancer of traditional dance at each tribes usually comes from the original people in their own town.
The tools are needed for Malay perform their traditional dance; coconut shell, fan, tembung, and scarves, etc. The tools are needed for dayak to perform their traditional dance; war equipment (Mandau), stick, mask, etc. The tools are needed for chinese to perform their traditional dance; Barong sai and liong, sward, fan, lance, lanterns, etc.
